State of Ohio Policy for Institutional Transfer

Ohio Transfer Policy

Transfer students shall be subject to the catalog in force at the time of their admission to the receiving institution and to any revisions that occur after its publication and prior to their enrollment. Once admitted, transfer students shall be subject to the same regulations governing applicability of catalog requirements as native students. Furthermore, transfer students shall be accorded the same class standing and other privileges (e.g., financial aid, registration, parking privileges, etc.) as native students on the basis of the number of credits earned. For more information about credit transfer: transfercredit.ohio.gov/.

Military Transfer Assurance Guidelines (MTAGs)

If you have served in the U.S. Armed Forces or National Guard, your training, experience and/or coursework may translate to college credit. All training, experience and coursework must first be recognized by the American Council on Education (ACE), accreditation agency, such as Ohio Department of Education (ODHE) or the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), in order to be eligible to earn college credit.

Military Transfer Assurance Guides (MTAGs) provide a statewide guarantee that certain types of military training, experience and/or coursework align to existing college and university courses and will be awarded appropriate credit. The list of MTAGs approved for Stark State College by the Ohio Department of Higher Education can be found at www.starkstate.edu/mtags. More information about military transfer is also available at the Ohio Department of Higher Education, transfercredit.ohio.gov.

Transfer Assurance Guidelines (TAGs)

Students are guaranteed the transfer of applicable credits among Ohio’s public colleges and universities and equitable treatment in the application of credits to admissions and degree requirements. Students can complete specific general education courses anywhere in the public system as well as many courses in the degree/major that have been pre-identified for transfer. For more information about TAGs available through Stark State: starkstate.edu/tags.

Transferology

Transferology is an online tool that helps students view program requirements, course equivalencies, and see how courses transfer to another college or university. To get access to all that Transferology has to offer: transferology.com/welcome.htm.

Prior Learning Assessment

To help students earn postsecondary certificates and degrees, Stark State College will advance and promote the awarding of credit to students for prior learning based on transparent, consistent and rigorous statewide standards. Assessing the prior learning of students recognizes that college-level learning is acquired through means in addition to credit course enrollment. Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) is a comprehensive phrase used to reference the evaluation methods to measure prior learning experience. PLA extends articulation and transfer policy to current professional licensure or certification; completion of formal training/certificate – including non-credit training; military transcript/ACE transcript; portfolio; divisional proficiency exam/challenge exam; personal interview; bypass prerequisites; or CLEP or AP up to the maximum established credit hours. PLA is evaluation of learning acquired outside of the college and is documented as “CR” credit.

AA/AS Degrees

Stark State’s associate of arts and associate of science degrees are the first step to a bachelor’s degree, providing a foundation in general education with special emphasis on the baccalaureate degree students plan to pursue.

These transfer degrees are intended as an affordable, transferable beginning to a four-year degree. Students should talk with their academic advisor for more information.

Ohio Transfer TRANSFER 36

Another option for students is the transfer module, which guarantees the transfer of a minimum of 36-40 semester credit hours of specified courses in English, mathematics, arts and humanities, social sciences, and natural and physical sciences from Stark State to any Ohio public college or university and vice versa. For more information about Stark State’s transfer module: starkstate.edu/admissions/ohiotransfer36/.
