Note: O.H. = Observation Hours Required. Students must successfully complete all required observation hours and other course assignments in order to pass the course.
The American Sign Language (ASL) Career Enhancement Certificate is designed to provide individuals with an opportunity to gain basic skills in American Sign Language as well as enhance their knowledge and understanding of the deaf culture.
Completion of the ASL Career Enhancement certificate does not prepare an individual to be an interpreter.
Each course requires the student to participate in prescribed observations related to the ASL curriculum. Test-out options or life experience credit for ASL courses are not available.
The classes in this certificate also apply toward the completion of the American Sign Language One-Year Certificate (1075) and the Associates of Science Education Degree (1060).
Program Learning Outcomes
This program is designed to prepare students to demonstrate the following learning outcomes:
- Demonstrate understanding of and respect for the deaf community.
- Use expressive signing for communication with individuals/groups in the deaf community.
- Use receptive signing skills to interpret expressive communication from deaf individuals/groups.
