The Stark State College Automotive Maintenance and Light Repair Career Enhancement Certificate quickly prepares the student to enter the job market at an automotive service facility. In our state-of-the-art automotive facility, students will use the latest tools and equipment to apply practical service techniques to our fleet of late-model vehicles. This builds hands-on skills that can be applied immediately upon completion.
The curriculum is accredited by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) preparing students to pursue Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification.

Program Learning Outcomes
This program is designed to prepare students to demonstrate the following learning outcomes:
- Students will demonstrate the ability to perform essential engine maintenance tasks, including oil changes, filter replacements, belt inspections, and fluid checks. Graduates will follow proper procedures and safety protocols to ensure engine longevity and performance in compliance with manufacturer guidelines.
- Graduates will acquire the skills to inspect, diagnose, and service basic electrical components, such as batteries, lighting, fuses, and wiring connections. Emphasis will be placed on troubleshooting electrical issues using diagnostic tools and maintaining vehicle reliability and safety.
- Students will develop the ability to inspect, repair, and maintain automotive brake systems, including disc and drum brakes, and perform tire-related services such as rotation, balancing, and alignment. Graduates will ensure these systems meet industry safety standards and manufacturer specifications.
- Graduates will be able to perform light repairs and routine maintenance on vehicle steering and suspension systems, including shock absorbers, struts, and wheel alignments. Additionally, students will learn to perform fluid services such as coolant, transmission, and power steering fluid exchanges, following manufacturer recommendations for optimal vehicle performance.
