Chemistry (ASC)

Stark State’s chemistry program provides a strong foundation in chemical principles through hands-on lab experience, small classes, and personalized instruction, preparing students for transfer to four-year programs in chemistry, biochemistry, or related fields. It also builds critical thinking and technical skills that support careers in areas like health sciences, environmental science, engineering, and laboratory technology.

Students should make an appointment to see their advisor before registering for classes each semester. They should have prepared a completed registration form, including courses they wish to take, prior to this meeting.

Elective Additional Credit

Self-selection of courses and not following the approved degree program could adversely affect graduation, transfer to a 4-year institution, and financial aid.  Students should visit the website of the university and program to which they are transferring for their course requirements.  Also, visit Transferology at www.transferology.com to assist in developing a plan for transferring to another college or university.  Students should select Ohio Transfer 36 approved and TAG approved courses.

Program Learning Outcomes

This program is designed to prepare students to demonstrate the following learning outcomes:

  • Demonstrate general familiarity with the following areas in chemistry: analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical and an ability to employ critical thinking and perform quantitative calculations with an understanding of the concepts. 
  • Work safely and effectively in a diverse group of peers to solve problems and interact productively.
  • Define problems clearly, develop testable hypothesis, design and execute appropriate experiments, analyze data, and draw appropriate conclusions. Demonstrate knowledge of basic safety, analytical, and technical skills in the laboratory. 
  • The ability to retrieve information efficiently and effectively by searching the chemical literature, to evaluate technical articles critically, and to manage many types of chemical information. Be able to present information in an organized manner using clear visual representations of complex data sheets.
