Stark State College’s health information management (HIM) program prepares students for in-demand careers managing and protecting healthcare data by combining technical, administrative, and clinical knowledge. Students learn to handle medical records and information systems, ensure data accuracy and compliance with regulations, code diagnoses and procedures for billing and research, and safeguard patient privacy under standards like HIPAA.

Students in the Health Information Management major are required to take HIT121 Health Data Management and Delivery Systems. HIT230 Healthcare Delivery in the U.S. is required for all other majors.

Because of the strong emphasis on science in this major, applicants must have successfully completed chemistry and biology in high school. Students who did not complete the courses in high school and those who prefer to refresh their knowledge of the material should complete the listed pre-requisites.

BIO121 Anatomy and Physiology I and BIO122 Anatomy and Physiology II can be substituted for BIO123 Principles of Human Structure and Function.

“B” or better in BIO101 Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology or High School Biology (must be within 5 years)
Students are required to follow the program curriculum in effect when they begin taking technical courses, not when students are accepted to the College or program.
Minimum grade of “C” in all technical and non-technical courses in the program curriculum is required.

- Accurately code diagnosis and procedures on emergency room, ambulatory surgery, observation, and inpatient health records.
- Assign MS-DRG’s to inpatient health records and AOCs to outpatient health records.
- Demonstrate ability to comprehend, apply, and evaluate clinical documentation and apply HIPAA privacy policies and procedures.
- Demonstrate understanding of Utilization and Risk Management programs.
- Demonstrate organizational ability, positive attitude, and professional appearance.
- Demonstrate satisfactory attendance.
- Demonstrate responsiveness to constructive feedback and possess interpersonal skills.
