Medical Laboratory Technology (AAS)

As a medical laboratory technician, you’ll analyze the blood, tissues and fluids in the human body with precision instruments, such as microscopes and automated analyzers. You’ll assist in complicated chemical, microscopic and bacteriological tests, including blood cholesterol level, microscopic examination of the blood to detect the presence of diseases and cultures of body fluid or tissue samples to determine the presence of bacteria, parasites or other microorganisms. Technicians may also type and cross-match blood samples. Medical technicians also collect blood samples.

Because of the strong emphasis on science in this major, applicants must have successfully completed chemistry and biology in high school. Students who did not complete the courses in high school, and those who prefer to refresh their knowledge of the material, should complete the listed pre-requisites.

“B” or better in BIO101 Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology or High School Biology (must be within 5 years).

Students are required to follow the program curriculum in effect when they begin taking technical courses, not when students are accepted to the College or program.

Program Learning Outcomes

This program is designed to prepare students to demonstrate the following learning outcomes:

  • Demonstrates an understanding of laboratory analysis ranging from waived and point of care testing to complex testing encompassing all the major areas of the clinical laboratory and be able to function at all phases of the analytic process, pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic. 
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform routine clinical laboratory tests (hematology, clinical chemistry, immunohematology, microbiology, serology/immunology, coagulation) as the primary analyst.  The level of analysis ranges from waived and point of care testing to complex testing encompassing all major areas of the clinical laboratory (NAACLS). 
  • Demonstrate the ability to use previously learned information and skills to new situations, recognize and resolve problems that arise in the testing process.
  • Demonstrates the ability to communicate in the English language, verbally, written, and in electronic formats (as in laboratory information system).
  • Demonstrate commitment to the patient and profession by displaying ethical and moral attitudes required for interacting with patient, professional associates, and the community.
